Save Time: Generate Online Gap-Fill Exercises with ChatGPT

One little known feature is that in the Clozetesting editor, you can paste a text and have all text in brackets replaced with gaps. With the help of ChatGPT, you can therefore very quickly generate your fill-in-the-blank exercise if you want to test for instance some grammar rule.

Here's a step-by-step guide of creating an example exercise with ChatGPT and Clozetesting:

  1. Head over to chatgpt.com
  2. Write a prompt to generate a text, for example: "Generate a short story about friendship and adventure".

If you already have a text that you want to use, you can paste it and ask it to use it in the next step instead.
  3. After it generated a text, write a prompt to let ChatGPT know what kind of words you would like to convert into a gap, for example: "Put all verbs into curly brackets"
  4. Now copy the generated text and return to clozetesting.com. Inside the editor menu, go to Tools -> Replace Text In Brackets with Gaps
Replace Text in Brackets with Gaps
  5. Now you can paste your text (Ctrl+V or right-click in the text field and then select "Paste"):
  6. This is what you will get inside the editor:
  7. And then you can click on "Show" to see how the generated exercise which you can share with your students looks like:

This currently only works with gaps. If you find this useful and would like us to make it work with dropdowns or drag&drop exercises and have an idea for how the prompt could look like, please let us know.

If you found this useful and are using this method to create your exercises, I would be interested in learning more about the kind of prompts that you use. Please contact me via the feedback form.
