How to create an exercise

Clozetesting.com supports fill-in-the-blanks, dropdowns, drag & drop wordlists and multiple choice questions. An exercise can contain several questions, and you can mix all question types in a single exercise. This guide explains how to create, configure, and share your activity.

1. Building your exercise from questions

An exercise is made up of one or more questions, and you can mix question types in one exercise. Start by giving your exercise a title. A new exercise is empty, so add your first question with one of the buttons below the title:

  • "Add gap-fill question": a text with gaps, dropdowns or drag & drop words (see section 2).
  • "Add multiple choice question": a question with answer options (see section 3).

Each question is its own block in the editor, numbered Question 1, Question 2, and so on. Students see them in that order.

  • Use the / buttons in the question header to change the order, and the button to delete a question.
  • When there are many questions, they are split over several pages in the editor. Use the pager above and below the questions to move between them.
  • An exercise needs at least one question before it can be published.

2. Gap-fill questions

Type (or paste) your text into the editor of a gap-fill question, then turn words into gaps using the toolbar.

Fill in the blanks

Select a word or phrase with your mouse and click "Make Gap" in the toolbar. The selected text becomes a blank for students to fill in.

Dropdowns

Select the correct word and click "Make Dropdown". A dialog allows you to add incorrect options (distractors). The start of the list is always the correct answer.

Wordlists (drag & drop)

First, click "Insert Wordlist Block" to place a container where the word options will appear. Then highlight a word in your text and click "Add to Wordlist". These words move into the bank for students to drag and drop. Each gap-fill question has its own wordlist.

3. Multiple choice questions

Click "Add multiple choice question" and fill in the following fields:

  • Question: the text shown to students.
  • Question type: Multiple choice (one answer correct) shows radio buttons, Checkboxes (several answers correct) lets students tick more than one answer.
  • Options: type each answer and mark the correct one(s) with "Correct answer". A question needs at least two options. Use "+ Add an option" for more and the button to remove one.
  • Randomize option order: shows the options in a different order for every student.
  • Explanation (optional): shown to students when the answers are revealed.

When Display correction is enabled, the option a student selected gets a green tick if it is correct and a red cross if it is wrong.

Importing questions with AI

With "Generate with AI" you can paste Moodle XML generated by ChatGPT or Gemini. Every question in the XML is imported as a separate question block: multichoice questions become multiple choice questions (checkboxes if several answers are correct) and cloze questions become gap-fill questions.
